Singapore's Second Foreign Minister to face International Dispute

Singapore news

With the Singapore government announcing its plan to turn the country into an Asian giant, Singapore news has become a hot topic among Singaporeans. This small country located off the coast of the Malay Peninsula has been ruled by the British for more than a century now and has come a long way in becoming an independent nation. This new venture by the Singapore government will help the country achieve economic growth and become the biggest economic power in Southeast Asia.

Recently the Singapore government has been focusing on turning Singapore into a modern and efficient trading hub in the world. By having a strong economy, high standard of living and an educated population, Singapore will be able to join the rapidly growing nations of the east like China and India. Recently the prime minister of Singapore took over from his dad and cabinet secretary for the role of national development and external affairs. The first thing that he did was to form a committee of experts which were to be consulted on various issues concerning Singapore's future growth. The prime minister has also brought in the constitution and by-laws of Singapore for a second phase of constitution-making.

There are many changes happening within the Singapore government as well as the various ministries involved. One major change taking place in the Singaporean government is the appointment of the foreign affairs ministry. The Singaporean foreign affairs ministry has been a little neglected by the prime minister and his cabinet secretary since it is not connected to the Singapore government. The ministry has been given a lot of importance in recent years because of its contribution towards world events.

For example, China was very angry at Singapore's vote at the United Nations to diplomatically support the Palestine cause. China does not like this kind of nation, supporting human rights and has demanded a strong response from the Singapore government. But now with the new Prime Minister, Dr. Lim Siow Jin, the Singapore government is coordinating better with China on various issues such as the Palestine issue. Through the Singapore-based Association of Small Businesses of Singapore (ASB) and the Singapore International Business Exchange (SIBEX), both sides have come together to ease the pressure from China.

Currently the Singaporean second minister for foreign affairs, Mr Lin Jia tong, is busy with the dialogue between Singapore and China over the maritime border. In fact, the latest diplomatic incident took place when the Singaporean coast guard prevented Chinese dredging vessels from entering into Singapore waters. The Chinese vessel had stopped near Hoh Samui Island and then refused to allow passage through into Singapore when the coast guard saw the flag of Singapore and tried to escort it back. The coast guard called in the help of the US navy, which then used its jet boats to push back the Chinese ship. Finally, the Singaporean authorities warned China that they will be taking action if it goes ahead.

Currently the Singaporean home affairs minister, Mr Siti Berberian, is also dealing with the Taiwan issue. The first minister to take a stand over the issue was the then prime minister, Mr Lee, who made a personal visit to Taipei later that year. Since then, other governments from around the world have joined Taipei in condemning the move by China to change the positioning of its island. Currently, Singapore is the only country to have filed a protest with the international community. It is expected that the second minister, Mr Lin, will follow suit and make a strong statement over the maritime dispute between Taipei and China. If not, Singapore may well find itself isolated on the issue.
